On Palm Sunday our liturgy begins by remembering Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the crowd who shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Hosanna means ‘Save us now!’) These were pilgrims who knew Jesus from his time visiting their cities in Galilee, who witnessed his miracles and embraced him.
Scripture scholars and the late Pope Benedict XVI suggest that the crowd which gathered in front of Pilate’s palace on Good Friday were residents of Jerusalem, who had heard about this preacher but did not know him, and therefore did not embrace him. They eagerly shouted for his crucifixion.
At the Easter Vigil, we will stand alongside our sisters and brothers who have come to know and to embrace Christ on the OCIA journey, either for the first time or as the deepening of their baptismal journey, and we will all be asked, “Do you believe?”
We’ve been preparing for this question throughout Lent. Do you believe and embrace the one God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Do you believe in the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church? Do you believe in the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting?
Please continue to pray for our community members who will celebrate the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Please continue to welcome and walk with them on this journey of faith.
